Calibration and validation

How to select a laboratory reference method for an online moisture system

The online system learns a relationship to a defined reference result. It cannot correct an unsuitable, inconsistent or poorly controlled laboratory method.

Performance depends on the material, reference method, operating range and installed configuration described in the project.

01

Start with material and contract scope

Cereals, solid biofuels, paper, aggregates and other materials use different reference frameworks. Confirm the current method with the quality team, contract or competent laboratory.

02

Record the complete method condition

Wet or dry basis, sample preparation, drying temperature, time, endpoint, volatile matter, weighing and calculation all influence the reported result.

03

Measure reference-method performance

Duplicates, controls and laboratory records help separate reference variation from online-system variation. The reference method contributes to total uncertainty.

04

Create a method-approval record

Record material and grade, method identifier and revision, wet/dry basis, preparation, drying condition, endpoint, calculation, storage limit, duplicate rule, laboratory owner and approval date. If a contract or regulator names a method, record that obligation separately from the method used for process calibration.

05

Do not turn a source into a product claim

A standard or laboratory method supports how a reference result is produced; it does not certify the online instrument or guarantee performance. Product suitability still depends on the material range, sampling match, installed configuration and independent project validation.

Before you act

Engineering checklist

  • Confirm the method scope covers the material
  • Record standard and revision
  • Define sample storage and maximum delay
  • Document calculation basis
  • Agree laboratory responsibility and quality checks
